Partial Knee Replacement is a type of knee
replacement in which only the damaged portion of the knee is replaced with an implant. It is
also called as Unicompartmental Knee replacement. This procedure is an alternative to total
knee replacement for patients whose disease is limited to just one area of the knee.
The knee can be divided into three compartments: patellofemoral, the compartment in front
of the knee between the kneecap and thighbone, the medial compartment, on the inside
portion of the knee, and lateral compartment which is the area on the outside portion of the
knee joint.
Partial knee replacement is done through a smaller incision, patients usually spend less time
in the hospital, have a faster recovery and return to normal activities sooner than total knee
replacement patients with a higher satisfaction rate.
Partial knee replacement is a surgical option if your arthritis is confined to a single compartment of your knee with an intact ACL and minimal deformity.
An incision is made on the front of your knee. Once your knee joint is opened, it is examined to
ensure the arthritis is limited to one compartment and your ligaments are intact.
During the surgery the damaged portion of your knee is removed. This is replaced with metal
implants at the ends of the bone and a plastic insert is placed between the metal components.
Your wound will then be closed and you will we taken to your room.
Most patients will go home 1-3 days after surgery. You will start weight bearing soon after surgery and may need a walking aid for a few days. A rehabilitation protocol, customised to your requirements will be drawn by Dr Jay Shah and his Knee Rehab Unit.
You will be explained the your rehabilitation plan and it will be monitored by the team to support you in achieving the best outcome following your surgery.
